Perceived effectiveness of the memory book technique in supporting young widows through grief: Insights from Borrowdale suburb, Harare
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study investigates the efficacy of the Memory Book Technique as a supportive intervention for young widows in processing grief and fostering emotional healing. Focusing on young widows in Zimbabwe, the objectives included assessing the efficacy of the technique in promoting emotional healing, addressing cognitive symptoms associated with grief, and considering cultural adaptations of the method. Employing a qualitative approach and a phenomenological design, the research involved purposive sampling of 15 participants from Borrowdale, utilizing semi-structured interviews and reflective journals for data collection. Thematic analysis revealed that the Memory Book Technique is an effective method for emotional healing among young widows, providing a safe space for emotional expression, confronting distressing memories, alleviating feelings of isolation, and restoring self-worth and hope. The technique facilitates reminiscence, alleviates loneliness, and strengthens family bonds. Notably, the Memory Book mimics exposure-based treatment methodologies, enabling young widows to navigate their loss and promoting post-traumatic growth. Findings suggest that it assists in managing cognitive symptoms of grief by transforming fragmented memories into a coherent narrative, reducing negative thought patterns, and enhancing focus and concentration. Additionally, it aligns with continuous connection theory, conceptualizing memories as long-term relationships, which helps mitigate cognitive dissonance experienced during mourning. However, the study indicates that the long-term effectiveness of the Memory Book Technique is contingent upon its adaptation to the local cultural, spiritual, and socioeconomic context. Recommendations include incorporating indigenous languages, proverbs, and storytelling methods to strengthen its impact. The study concludes that the Memory Book should become a central element in grieving support frameworks provided by counselors and social workers, with an emphasis on family involvement. Involvement of religious leaders could further enrich the Memory Book with spiritual reflections, thereby reinforcing the support for widows.
